5 investment themes for a positive outlook…
There’s no denying it, bad news sells. And the British media is up there with the best of them for running with a negative story. But when it comes to investing, it doesn’t pay to only focus on what’s going wrong.
Investing is inherently optimistic. It’s believing that humans will innovate and solve problems for a better way of life. As we have for thousands of years. From there we need to find those areas where there’s the potential for growth and where there’s an opportunity to invest in something that could fundamentally change the way we live our lives for the better. The feel good factor cannot be underestimated.
Here are 5 themes we believe have the potential for future impact, if you’d like to focus on something a bit more positive for a change.
(And remember, we’re always happy to chat in more detail about these kind of opportunities – just drop us a line.)
DNA Sequencing
The introduction of rapid DNA sequencing methods has dramatically accelerated biological and medical discovery, making it quicker and easier to not only diagnose and cure specific diseases but to inform patient care. It opens the door to more personalised medical care, transforming our healthcare provision. These developments have already resulted in real life innovations, for example there has been some glimmer of hope in the fight against Alzheimer’s - click here for article.
Robotics
Robots have been a fascination of human kind for decades, but we’re getting to the point now where they are really starting to come into their own. We are tantalisingly close to them taking over a whole host of the most mundane jobs to allow us to do more of the creative and thoughtful jobs. We can definitely look forward to seeing them help increase harvests – we have had a shortfall in produce pickers since Brexit, for example, meaning crops have been left to rot - and lessen the impact on healthcare as we move away from manual labour. Humans are now working far less than they have been at any time in history and this trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
Energy storage
Increasing the capacity per battery – for cars and homes alike - is going to be a total game changer for the climate challenge. The speed at which this industry is advancing is incredible. Innovation here will facilitate a more robust electric future that has the potential to help us transform the way we live in a far more sustainable way. Earlier this month, Toyota have claimed a breakthrough in solid state batteries to halve the weight, double the capacity and shorten the recharge times - click here for article.
Blockchain technology
Like energy storage, digital storage will allow for some exciting developments that are set to vastly improve the way we do things. Blockchain technology for example will allow us to enjoy the seamless transfer and safe storage of data – there will be no more missing paper files. It will also open the world up to opportunities that will allow us to enjoy things we previously never thought possible, like greater involvement between artists and the people who follow them.
AI
While many of us will have heard enough about AI (and especially Chat GPT) to last a lifetime, it is worth taking a step back from all the noise to recognise just what could be possible here. Ultimately, AI will underpin all of the other themes we’ve mentioned and could prove to be an unimaginably effective way to increase productivity. AI feels like it could be the second coming of the internet and will spawn lots of new innovations and technological breakthroughs. We just need to understand how best to harness its potential for good whilst minimising any Terminator-style takeover!
And of course the team is available if you’d like to discuss your investments further and any new opportunities that could work for you.
