After half a year of adventures….
After half a year of adventures, I am finally back. My backpack is stored away (for now), and the unbelievable experiences already feel like a distant memory or even a dream. Now, I face a new challenge: returning to the structured routine of work.
At first, the transition from travel to a 9-to-5 job was daunting, but with the right mindset and strategies, I’m embracing the return to the workforce after six months round the world.
Reflect on the journey
The first thing I did—well, actually the second (catching up on sleep was first!)—was take some time to reflect on my travels.
What did I learn? How did I grow?
I believe I’ve grown significantly in terms of self-confidence, problem-solving, open-mindedness, leadership skills, and increased empathy. I’ve been considering how to bring these qualities back to my role at Engage, and I believe these characteristics will be incredibly beneficial.
Networking and Relationship Building: By meeting new people and forming connections while away, I’ve enhanced my networking skills, which I can now apply more effectively in my role.
Efficient Planning: Managing the overall travel route and keeping track of important documents has proven my ability to stay organized in the workplace and execute complex projects with structure.
Understanding Others: Listening to people’s stories and learning about their backgrounds has deepened my gratitude for my own life and increased my empathy towards others. This will help me better understand colleagues’ and clients’ perspectives and enhance my ability to think outside the box at work.
Creating Solutions and Handling Uncertainty: Dealing with unexpected situations—such as missing a flight, enduring a stormy boat trip, or handling one too many hospital visits—taught me how to manage stress and emotions. These experiences will translate into innovative problem-solving skills at work, along with an enhanced ability to stay calm and adapt.
Ease back into routine
I’ve made a conscious effort to ease back into a healthy routine. I’m eating well, exercising, and enjoying the long days of the English summer. I also have some exciting outings and travel reunions to look forward to, as well as a holiday at the end of the year. These plans have made the transition back to routine much more encouraging.
Embrace a new perspective
The sense of curiosity and broadened outlook on life that I gained from my travels can be brought into my work. I now approach challenges with a fresh mindset and feel confident in proposing innovative ideas to the team.
Be patient with myself
Adjusting back to work life after an extended break takes time. I’ve learned the importance of being patient with myself as I navigate this transition, and of celebrating small victories along the way. My amazing experiences have renewed my energy and motivation for work, and I’m excited for the months and years ahead.
